5 Quarantine Friendly Date Ideas (Plus 3 for LDR)
Being stuck in isolation sucks. I’m just going to say it. It really sucks. Whether stuck with your roommates or your family, we’re all going a little crazy at this point. However, if we’re all going to get through this quarantine, we need to do our part to social isolate and protect those around us. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t have our date nights anymore. We may need to modify them and tweak them here and there, but we can still have our Friday date nights all the same.
Idea 1: A picnic in the park (or even in your own backyard)
Something that I’ve noticed since quarantine started is how infrequently people go outside. It seems that since we can’t go to the mall we can’t go anywhere. This is not true. The best quarantine friendly dates are the ones that gets you out of the house while still social isolating as best as possible. So why not grab a soccer ball, order some take out, and go down to the park? If you want to be extra careful you can even bring a picnic blanked so you don’t have to sit at the tables!
Idea 2: Home movie night
You don’t always have to go to a movie theater to have an awesome movie date. You can make a perfect one right at home! Before I came home from college, Tim and I would have home movie nights all the time. Just grab a bunch of blankets and a pile of pillows and voila! A fabulous (and cozy) date night. If you want to make it even extra you can make a blanket fort, bake some brownies and eat them with ice cream while enjoying your favorite movie cuddled up together. What can get better than that?
Idea 3: Road trip
In this life of quarantine, it’s easy to feel confined in one space. We need the opportunity to feel like we’re doing something and feel like we’re free, even if for a moment. Sometimes we need to pull a page out of an old country movie and go on a good old fashioned road trip. Or even just for a drive. Taking the chance to roll down your window and let the sun shine in as you chat about endless nothings is a good chance to grow closer to your partner. Besides, it’s a good opportunity to have a rare bit of privacy when even a closed door isn’t enough.
Idea 4: Homemade ice cream
Homemade ice cream is always a ton of fun to make. As it’s been getting warmer outside I’ve been more and more excited to make it. Besides, we all need a little bit of fun in life, so instead of going to a stuffy restaurant and spending thirty bucks on creme brûlée, why not spend 5 and make ice cream yourself? The other day I posted my own ice cream recipe, but pro tip, if you do this you might want to do it outside because it can get a little messy. 😉
Idea 5: Spa night
What better way to pamper the person you love most than with a spa night? A hot bath, a few nice face masks and a massage and you’ve suddenly turned your loved ones into warm putty. I don’t think there’s any other way to better show your significant other how much you love them than by pampering them with your own hands, especially when they take the opportunity to return the favor to you.
For some of us, the distance is a little further than what we would like. Currently this is the boat I’m hanging out in. It’s hard to have the person we love the most so far away, but these date ideas can help make that distance hurt a little less.
LDR Idea 1: Zoom movie
I love modern day technology. It makes things so much easier in day to day life. We can access instant messages, see what our friends are up to, and we can have dates with our long distance loved ones. One of the most common long distance dates is attempting to watch a movie together, however, even that has changed! Instead of trying to press play on the show together, technology has evolved to a point where you can just share your screen with whoever you’re talking to. No need to worry about timing when it’s one person pressing play; just make sure you have a decent wifi connection before you start though! 🙂
LDR Idea 2: Phone call walk
Something that was common for Tim and I to do once everything shut down was go on walks together. We would walk together in the middle of the night, just lost in each other and the stars. It was hard having to come back to Washington knowing that I wouldn’t be able to have that kind of conversation anymore. However, because of technology nowadays, you can just pop in some earbuds and walk for as long as you want while talking on the phone. Or if you don’t want to walk you can just talk and sit at home. In our society it’s so easy to get caught up in the ease of texting that we forget how special it is just to hear the voices of the people we love.
LDR Idea 3: Game night
Even when you’re far apart, the internet is amazing at making sure you can still have awesome date nights. Something a lot of people don’t realize is how there is a multitude of multiplayer video games that you can play, even from hundreds of miles apart! Games like Minecraft, Stardew Valley, and even Fortnite can all be played together from a distance! And to make it even better, a lot of games can be played while also video chatting your significant other! Now they can hear you rage at your game from hundreds of miles away! Just kidding. But if this is something you’re interested in, here’s a list of 25 games to play while social distancing.
Spending time with our loved ones doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive in order to be special. Just taking the time to show one another your love is all a date has to do. Showing your significant other that you’re willing to take time out of your day to dedicate to them can communicate so much more than a simple “I love you” usually would, especially in a time like this. So take some time to show the person you love how much they mean to you and enjoy the free time you have in quarantine, because time like this will never come back.
